Latin African Christianity under Byzantium

When Belisarius destroyed the Vandal kingdom in 533, the Nicene church of Roman Africa came out of a century of persecution and was restored to its buildings and its bishoprics. And within twenty years it was the most stubborn opposition Justinian faced anywhere in his own empire. When he condemned the Three Chapters to appease the Miaphysites, the African bishops refused. Facundus of Hermiane wrote twelve books against it, Reparatus of Carthage was deposed and exiled, and the chronicler Victor of Tunnuna spent years in prison and exile for the same refusal. Africa stayed a place where theology got argued at full volume. Maximus the Confessor spent formative years here, and African councils in 646 rejected the empire's next attempted compromise about the wills of Christ. Then Arab armies reached Carthage in the 690s, and the ancient African church, the church that had given Latin Christianity Tertullian, Cyprian and Augustine, was finished within a few generations.
